A young couple recently purchased their first home in Brookhaven, PA. Eager to personalize their new space, they embarked on their initial home improvement project: updating an old pressure-treated wooden deck that had seen better days.

Project Overview

The couple’s wooden deck, while structurally sound, was in dire need of modernization. The substructure—comprising the foundational supports and framing—remained robust, but the decking, railings, latticework, and stair components were weathered and outdated. The couple wanted to revamp their outdoor area into a functional and aesthetically pleasing space that would serve as a gathering spot for family and friends.

Challenges

As this was their first home improvement project, the couple faced a steep learning curve. They needed to understand the scope of work required and make decisions on materials and design. Assessment and Planning: Our first step involved a thorough assessment of the existing deck’s substructure. Given that the framework was in good condition, we assured the couple that a complete rebuild of the deck surface and accessories would be sufficient to achieve their goals.
Material Selection: The couple desired a modern, low-maintenance solution. After discussing their preferences and requirements, we recommended a combination of AZEK PVC Trim, TimberTech Composite Decking, and TimberTech Radiance Rail Express. These materials were chosen for their durability, minimal maintenance needs, and contemporary appearance. AZEK PVC Trim would provide a clean, crisp finish, while TimberTech products would offer a blend of performance and style.
Finishing Touches: With the major components completed, we focused on the final touches. Our team ensured that all elements were securely installed and aligned, paying attention to the details that would make the deck both functional and visually appealing.

Execution

Decking Replacement: We started by removing the old wooden decking. Our team carefully cleaned the existing substructure and made any necessary reinforcements to ensure a solid foundation. We then installed the TimberTech Composite Decking, chosen for its resistance to weather and wear, ensuring the deck would withstand the elements and remain vibrant for years.
Railing and Lattice Installation: Next, we replaced the old railing and latticework with the TimberTech Radiance Rail Express system. This modern railing system enhances safety and complements the new decking with its sleek lines and durable construction.
Stair Landing and Steps: The original stairs were dismantled and rebuilt to provide better stability and appearance. We constructed a new stair landing and steps, integrating them seamlessly into the updated deck design.
