S&S Remodeling Contractors is incredibly proud to be a 4th-generation, family-owned and operated business. We are the only 4th-generation contractor in the entire region and the second longest-standing business in all of Brookhaven. Still operating out of our original, newly renovated headquarters, we carry the weight and pride of our family name into every single project we undertake.
While the home improvement industry has changed drastically since my Great Grandfather’s era, our commitment to our neighbors hasn’t wavered. We provide professional, seamless installations across Delaware, Chester, and New Castle counties, proudly serving local communities like Brookhaven, Philadelphia, Aston, Chadds Ford, and West Chester. A Legacy of Hard Work: Over 200 Years in the Making
Our family’s roots in this region run exceptionally deep. We immigrated to the United States from the British Empire in 1802, and we have been a proud part of the local fabric ever since. By 1810, my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather was born in Philadelphia. Even though he couldn’t read or write, he worked diligently as a “Plate Printer” on the printing presses for a Philadelphia newspaper. That same working-class grit and determination have been passed down through our family for over two centuries.
The Birth of S&S Remodeling
In the spring of 1953, my Great Grandfather, Walt Subers Sr., and two of his sons, Walt Jr. and Ray, saw a growing need in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, for quality home improvement and remodeling services. After researching the market and interviewing potential customers and suppliers, they launched S&S Home Improvement Company later that summer.
To put that era into perspective: in 1953, gas cost just 11 cents a gallon, you could buy a new Ford for under $2,000, and the average American income was $4,011 per year. The phrase, “You’ve come a long way baby!” has never had so much meaning! While our modern logo proudly notes that our family’s contracting heritage has been trusted since 1950, 1953 marked the official start of our journey as a dedicated family operation initially selling Venetian mini-blinds.
Evolution and The "Tin Man" Era
As the home improvement industry evolved, so did we.
1960s Innovation
We pivoted to the new gold standard of Aluminum Building Products, installing storm windows, siding, doors, and gutters.
A Permanent Home
We rebranded to S&S Aluminum and purchased our current headquarters in the Borough of Brookhaven.
The Brain Child
My grandfather, Ray Subers—a Drexel University graduate and the first in our family to go to college—eventually bought out the company after Walt Sr. and Walt Jr. retired.
The Original Tin Man
Ray ran the business for nearly 50 years until 2015. He was a bonafide businessman who would show up to appointments driving a Cadillac, wearing aviator glasses and a three-piece suit—relying entirely on his unmatched salesmanship rather than swinging a hammer.

1953
Our 1st Customer
In the spring of 1953, Walt Subers Sr. and two of his sons Walt Jr. and Ray saw a need in Delaware County, Pennsylvania for quality home improvement and remodeling services for residential and commercial customers.
1960
Passing the Torch
After Walter Sr. retired, his 2 boys (Ray and Walt Jr.) expanded the business beyond aluminum siding and windows to include whole house restoration built on the same promises and good name Walter Sr. created.
